Cara has been involved with the camp in many different roles since 2008 from cooking, health care, property, personnel, and even a wee bit of programming from time to time.

Cara was raised in Red Deer and attended Mount Calvary Lutheran Church faithfully with her mother while her dad and brother attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  After graduating from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer she went on to Concordia University College of Alberta in Edmonton. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music (Education Minor) while also beginning to complete the Colloquy courses needed to teach in Lutheran Schools. Upon completing her first degree, Cara then took a 2 year After Ed degree also at Concordia and entered into teaching that same year. She since has had the pleasure of working for Edmonton Public Schools, Peel School Board in Mississauga, and most recently the Chinooks Edge School district in Central Alberta.

Not only did Cara receive her degrees from Concordia, but it was also where she met her future husband (Colin Penman) and they have been married now for almost 21 years. They are thrilled to call Sylvan Lake their home for the last 9 years and, with their three children, Derek (20), Stuart (17) and Addison (13), they have become involved with Sylvan Lake Memorial Presbyterian Church.

We encourage everyone to get to know our new Director whether that is going to camp to lend a hand, sending your children to camps, or inviting her to your church for a visit. We are excited about the direction our ministry is being led in and can’t wait to see all the new things that God will do!
